Description
The first mainstream professional digital SLR, the Nikon D1 was introduced in June 1999. It featured a state-of-the-art 2.7 megapixel image sensor, 4.5 frames per second continuous shooting and an extremely fast autofocus. It was a milestone for camera technology and spelled the end of the film era.

PRIMAL Assessment
Although now obsolete, when it was introduced the D1 was one of the best cameras for surveillance applications and was popular with snipers and reconnaissance/surveillance personnel. Superseded by later models of both the Nikon D range and the Canon EOS.
