SPECIAL FORCES

Description:

An Operational Detachment is a force element from the US Army Special Forces or 'Green Berets'. The standard tactical unit is an Operational Detachment - Alpha (ODA) or 'A-Team'. Originally established with primary roles of training and leading guerrillas in a foreign country, or helping a country defend itself against guerrillas, the Special Forces have branched out into other roles such as counter-proliferation, hostage-rescue, etc. The SF motto is De Oppresso Liber (To Liberate the Oppressed).

Note: US SF should not be confused with the British term 'SF' which is the equivalent of the generic US term 'SOF'.

PRIMAL Assessment:

Green Berets are at the forefront of international engagement for US SOCOM and you can find them on every continent training and mentoring the soldiers of allied nations. The strength of the ODAs is their ability to operate with minimal support in austere environments using a high degree of initiative.
