R5

Description

The R4/R5 is a South African version of the Israeli Galil assault rifle which in turn is a development of the AKM. Improvements over the AKM include ambidextrous controls, rugged polymer stock and foregrip, an ergonomic safety switch, and tritium night sights. The R5 is a shorter carbine version of the R4 and is commonly used by elite units such as the police Special Task Force.

PRIMAL Assessment

An all-round excellent weapon, the R4/R5 is still in use today in South African military and police forces. It is however starting to show its age and could benefit from picatinny rails, an adjustable stock, and a suppressor.
